Judge Grants Atheist Soldier More Time to File Arguments

[-] Text [+]

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Attorneys for an atheist soldier suing the government over alleged religious freedom violations have been granted more time to file arguments with the federal court.

A Kansas City, Kan., judge granted the request Tuesday, giving attorneys for Spc. Jeremy Hall and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation until Sept. 15 to file the documents.

Those arguments will respond to the government’s motion to dismiss the case, which has been filed against an Army reservist and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Hall and the foundation allege his religious freedoms were violated while he was serving in Iraq last year. In addition, they claim that Gates permits a culture of Christian fundamentalism within the military.

steveh20, often times in the military when a person takes a stand for Christ they are ridiculed and mocked by peers and superiors alike. Granted there are some outstanding Christians in the military at all ranks, but being a practicing Christian in the military is not always an easy thing to be. But at the same time you don't see Christians taking the military to court over this.

    You have said....
"Writing that original comment was a cheapshot."

The only cheapshot is the lawsuit itself.

Mr. Hall could have chosen to keep his arguements private with the military. But the public attention may draw comments from McCain and Obama.

There may be a couple of things in play here, but it seems clear that Hall is placing his continued military service in question.

In answer to your comment...I am quite serious about the comments I contribute to this blog. I may mix in some humor from time to time, but these are not to be confused as cheapshots.

It is unique to have the opportunity to submit comments in a forum like this. I do not take this for granted.

You see a "culture of Christian fundamentalism" occurring because they are on the battlegrounds because the men and women there want it there.

He just wants out of the military. Good grief, the fact that the military has chaplains wasn't a clue?

Christians serve where God leads them to.
Even Christ was called to be tested with Satan in the wilderness.

It is a different story, however, if the Atheist or Christian are serving in a place they should not be in.

But that is not God's fault.

Don't reckon you'd write that if the words athiest and Christian in this article where interchanged.....

Maybe Mr. Hall just doesn't want to serve in the Military anymore.

Or maybe he is just testing out his activist muscles. Perhaps he is another Apostle Paul.
