8 People Dead, 10 Others Injured After Church Van Traveling From Convention Crashes in Florida
Some eight people are now dead and 10 others injured after a church van traveling from a convention crashed in a canal in Moore Haven, Florida, early Monday.
The Florida Highway Patrol told NBC Miami that the van, which was carrying 18 people, was heading eastbound on SR-78 when it passed through a stop sign in Moore Haven after midnight, according to preliminary investigations.
The vehicle then moved across all the lanes of US-27 before crashing into a steep and partially water-filled canal.
Police say the van came from a church in the Fort Pierce area but has not released the name of the church as next of kin were still being notified.
According to the Twitter feed of Eric Roby, TV news anchor for CBS12 News in West Palm Beach, the church van came from the Independent Haitian Assembly of God of Ft Pierce.
The driver died along with seven other passengers while 10 others were taken to local hospitals and some have reportedly since been released.
As of 5:45 a.m. two of the 10 injured passengers along with a 4-year-old child were reported to be in stable condition. Three were in serious condition; two were reported as trauma alerts while the condition of two others was unknown. It is unclear if these two were the ones released.
