Apple Watch 3 vs Apple Watch Series 2 Specs, Price Comparison: Latest Model Boasts LTE Version

Smartwatch users have a new device to consider: the Apple Watch 3. But how does it compare to its previous iteration?

Design-wise, the two models look identical. The screen sizes and types, as well as pixel resolution, remain the same. The Series 3 watch also has an Ion-X glass version, Sapphire crystal on Steel and Ceramic models, much like the Series 2. The straps are also interchangeable on both iterations.

For their memory, both the Series 2 and Series 3 Apple Watch have 512 MB. Storage, however, has improved on the Series 3 device. It has 16 GB for the cellular version and 8 GB for GPS only, while the Series 2 version had 8 GB (with 2 GB allotted for music). The two smartwatches also differ under the hood. The Series 2 runs on Apple S2 and WatchOS, while the Series 3 runs on Apple S3 and WatchOS 4.

But perhaps the most exciting new feature of the Apple Watch 3 is LTE. Users who go out for a run with their smartwatch but also like to check the internet during breaks can leave their smartphones safely at home.

Apple achieves the mobile internet feature using a small electronic SIM card, which is tinier than a nano SIM. The beauty of this is that the SIM has the same number as the user's iPhone. This means users can also use the smartwatch as an actual phone, calling people from their wrist.

Location data can detect when a user has left their phone at home. This will then result in the automatic switch of the data to the watch. Users can also listen to music through Apple Music, though it is unknown whether Spotify is also supported. Of course, wireless headphones are required.

The LTE on the Apple Watch 3 confirmed rumors that have long been going around about Apple's new device.

When it comes to cost, the Apple Watch 3 starts at $329 for the version without LTE (GPS only). The LTE version starts at $399. This is understandably more expensive than the Apple Watch 2, which is priced at $249.

The Apple Watch 3 will be released on Sept. 22.
