'Avatar 2' Latest News: Production About to Start, New Worlds and Life Forms to be Featured

James Cameron's 'Avatar' was released in 2009, and the film featured a lot of ground breaking technology in film-making that is still very much talked about nowadays. The film continues to hold the record for the highest grossing movie of all time, garnering a staggering total of $2.782 earnings worldwide.

For years, fans of the film have been waiting for a sequel, and now, it has been reported that the second 'Avatar' film will start its production starting fall of 2014. This was confirmed by Sam Worthington in 2013.

Cameron said that the film will not only have a sequel, but a third and fourth installment as well, according to the Avatar Wiki. "It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan," said Cameron.

"The CG plants and trees and creatures and the musculo-skeletal rigging of the main characters—that all takes an enormous amount of time to create. It'd be a waste not to use it again."

As of now, not too many plot details have been revealed yet, but the director said that 'Avatar 2' will introduce "whole new worlds, habitats and cultures" so it's very possible that other alien life forms other than the Na'vi will be featured in the sequel.

Aside from Worthington, who will reprise his role as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana has signed on for the next three 'Avatar' installments to play Neytiri, as well as Stephen Lang who was killed off at the end of the first film. Sigourney Weaver also hinted on the return of her character. Giovani Ribisi is also rumored to return as Parker Selfridge.

'Avatar 2' is slated to have a premiere date in December 2016.
