'Elementary' Season 6 Spoilers: Joan to Plan Revenge for Shinwell?

Joan (Lucy Liu) will continue to regret that she failed to save Shinwell (Nelsan Ellis) in the upcoming season of "Elementary."

In an interview with TVLine, Liu and executive producer Robert Hewitt Wolfe talked about why the ex-convict was so important to Joan. According to the actress, her character saw Shinwell as someone she could save and help to become a better person. Wolfe, on the other hand, said that Joan regarded it as a mission. Her dedication to the cause, as viewers saw, was such that she was even prepared to risk her friendship with Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller). It definitely looks like her disappointment over the shocking turn of events from last season's finale will carry over to the new installment.

"We wanted to play a little bit with Joan's impulse to save people. That's the thread that binds together all the things she's done in her life in some ways--being a surgeon, being a sober companion," Wolfe said in the video. "Being a detective for her is really about making the world a better place, helping people. And so we wanted to find something that would push those buttons a little bit and bring her into conflict with Sherlock."

Sherlock and Joan need to talk about many things in season 6. She is still hurt that her friend did not attend Shinwell's burial. Sherlock, for his part, has to tell Joan about the doctor's prognosis that he might have a brain tumor. He also needs to come clean about the hallucinations he keeps on having about his dead mother.

Another potential problem that will test their bond is the arrival of Sherlock's former flame. Speculations are rife that Moriarty (Natalie Dormer) will return to turn his world upside down once again. Joan will do her best to warn Sherlock against the other woman.

"Elementary" season 6 is rumored to air in 2018.
