George R.R. Martin Developing New Sci-Fi Series for HBO

George R.R. Martin is confirmed to be developing a brand new TV series for HBO, leaving his book fans dismayed he isn't likely to be hard at work finishing the sixth book in his epic fantasy novels, "Winds of Winter."

Martin is currently on the early stages of developing a new television series for HBO, which may further delay his progress on his sixth "Game of Thrones" book. After revealing he will not be writing the sixth season the epic fantasy series, he revealed that he will instead be working on a new TV project with the working title "Captain Cosmos."

The new series, 1949 at the dawn of the TV age, centers on a young and visionary writer who creates "a science fiction series that tells stories no one else will dare to tell," Yahoo! News reports.

Michael Cassutt, who wrote for the "The Outer Limits" and "Z Nation," has signed on to pen the series' pilot. As the show moves forward to completion, Martin will serve as the series producer when the show debuts on HBO.

Working on a new HBO series may put a damper on the completion of "The Winds of Winter." Martin had announced at the start of the year he intended to cancel on two of his regular appearances to concentrate on finishing the sixth book, which fans have conjectured will be published anytime between this year to 2017.

Meanwhile, the author has been sporadically releasing excerpts of the book to satisfy his fans, the most recent one being a chapter on Alayne/Sansa Stark posted last Thursday on his website.

With "Game of Thrones" having used up most of the material from the five existing books on which it is based, show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have released information they will not be borrowing from Martin's epic fantasy series to create the episodes for season six.
