'Godzilla vs. Kong' Writers' Room Assembled, Film Set For 2020 Release

The post-credits scene of "Kong: Skull Island" teased the inevitable meet-up of King Kong and Godzilla. And with a 2020 release set for their film together, a writers' room has already been assembled.

Legendary's "MonsterVerse" was kickstarted by 2014's "Godzilla," which featured the titular Japanese monster in all his glory, fighting against two Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms, aka MUTOs. The film also introduced viewers to Monarch, the same organization that spearheaded the trip to Skull Island in "Kong: Skull Island."

The post-credits scene of "Kong: Skull Island" saw Tom Hiddleston's James Conrad and Brie Larson's Mason Weaver being informed that there are other monsters in the world, including Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah.

A sequel to "Godzilla," titled "Godzilla: King of the Monsters," is set to hit theaters on March 22, 2019. "Godzilla vs. Kong" is scheduled to premiere a year later, on May 29, 2020. And, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a writers' room led by Terry Rossio ("Pirates of the Caribbean") has already been arranged.

"Star Trek Beyond" writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne are joining Rossio, as well as Lindsey Beer, who is currently adapting "The Kingkiller Chronicles." Cat Vasko, who is currently working on "Queen of the Air," is also included.

T.S. Nowlin ("Maze Runner," "Pacific Rim" sequel), Jack Paglen ("Transcendence," "Alien: Covenant") and J. Michael Straczynski ("Babylon 5," "World War Z") round out the room.

Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown are set to appear in "Godzilla: King of the Monsters," with further casting announcements expected.

Fans of the "MonsterVerse" are definitely excited to see Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah debut. Many initially thought that at least one of them would make an appearance in 2014's "Godzilla," but it looks like Legendary wanted to save them for future films. And while it remains to be seen what they will look like on screen, fans are hoping that they will be as epic as Sebastian Mora's fan art.
