iPhone 8 iFixit Teardown: What's Inside the New Device?
The iPhone 8 has just been released has just been released on Friday, Sep. 22, and a popular repair site wasted no time dismantling the new device to discover what's new in this year's Apple device.
iFixit, a popular repair site known for their detailed and approachable teardown videos of Apple devices, recently got their hands on an iPhone 8 for extensive analysis. While a similar teardown of the iPhone 8 Plus is still upcoming, this step-by-step dismantling already gives a great look at what Apple has put in their new iPhone for this year.
Unsurprisingly, little has changed from last year's teardown of the iPhone 7. A very similar In-Plane Switching (IPS) LED display is secured by waterproofing seals, which the iFixit team loosened with some help from a heating pad.
Repairability seems to have improved a bit with the iPhone 8, as Apple opted for the more universal Phillips screws instead of their usual tri-point. The battery pack, freed from a frame of stretch adhesive, confirms a reduced capacity compared to the iPhone 7, as Ars Technica notes.
The single main camera now has a larger sensor than the iPhone 7's, potentially giving it improved response in low light. An X-ray of the component also confirmed Optical Image Stabilization built into the part.
Finally digging out the component board, the iFixit team confirmed the listed specs of the new iPhone. There's the new A11 Bionic chip from Apple, with its accompanying 2 GB of Low-Power Double Data Rate Type 4 (LPDDR4) memory and Toshiba-branded storage.
Under the rest of the components, the iFixit crew dug out a part that's a clear step up from the iPhone 7: the Qi-enabled charging coil that lets the new iPhone charge wirelessly. This frees up a big source of strain on the Lightning port, a part that's often the first to go in previous models.
The video below shows the teardown and inspection of the iPhone 8, as done by iFixit just before the weekend. The iPhone 8, in 64 GB and 256 GB storage variants, is now available.
