Jeremy Lin Talks Jesus, Faith and Prayer in Q&A Session After Surgery
Knicks Guard Confesses to Fans He 'Struggles With Pride Everyday'
Jeremy Lin underwent a successful knee surgery on Monday, and followed the operation by conducting an impromptu question-and-answer session on Facebook with his fans, in which he opened up about his faith and the criticism he receives.
Lin, 23-year-old New York Knicks starting guard who will be out for six weeks to recover from a knee injury, was asked how he stayed so humble during increased media coverage over the past few months. Lin admitted that he had struggles with pride and credited Jesus Christ for humbling him.
"I struggle with pride every day, but the one thing that I try to remind myself everyday is that I'm still a sinner no matter how many points/assists/win I get on the court." Lin wrote to his fan. "God's grace and the death/resurrection of his son Jesus Christ has given me salvation even though I'm not worthy of it."
Another fan asked Lin, who has been vocal about his faith during his rise to fame, about his favorite Bible verse.
"I love Romans," Lin responded. "Especially Romans 5:3-5 or all of Romans 8."
While many of his fans expressed their love and admiration, other people used the opportunity to poke fun at Lin who has had issues with turning over the basketball while on the court. Although an individual inquired about Lin's plans to improve his turnovers, the 23-year-old guard seemed to have fun with the answer.
"Well I can tell you I will definitely have 0 turnovers for the next 6 weeks," Lin said. "So I guess that's an improvement right?"
When another fan asked Lin if he had ill feelings toward critics, he answered with a hypothetical response that he would give naysayers if given the opportunity.
"Everyone gets their own opinion and I respect that," Lin wrote on his Facebook page. "I just want God to be happy with my effort and my heart every time I step on the court!"
Still, Lin admitted that it was hard to watch his teammates on the court while he was recovering.
"I hope I'll be back for the playoffs," Lin told his fans. "It's killing me to watch the team without being able to play but I need to make sure my knee is 100% before I get back on the court so we will wait and see."
Instead of spending too much time sulking, the Asian-American guard asked fans to pray for his healthy recovery when a fan asked what prayer he needed most from his fans.
"A healthy/speedy recovery, wisdom on how to make the biggest impact with the Jeremy Lin foundation and a better understanding of the Jesus' death/resurrection on the cross," Lin answered.
