A Long Island shopping mall and various schools have been locked down after reports emerged of a shooting near Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island. New York police have reported that there are reports of an "active shooter" somewhere in or near the location of the mall.

Initial information coming from the area is sketchy and authorities have not confirmed any information yet.

The location of the reported shooting also has not been confirmed, but a shopping mall spokesperson at the East Garden City mall has confirmed the shooting did not take place on the mall property.

The mall has been completely locked down and no one is being allowed into the building. Those already in the building have been told to seek shelter and stay where they are for the moment as authorities investigate the situation.

Initial tweets from officials suggested they were investigating reports of shots fired in or near the parking lot.

Garden City Schools were also put on lockdown as a precaution, school officials said.

The news comes just days after a mass shooting in a Kenya shopping mall shocked the international community. In that case Islamic terrorists entered the mall and began shooting and executing non-Muslims. There is nothing to suggest the Long Island shooting has any connection to events in Kenya at this time.
