'Mallrats 2' Release Date Remains a Mystery: Original Cast Returning, Kevin Smith Says Script is Nearing Completion

Mention the name Kevin Smith, and kids of the '90s know that he's the one behind the film "Mallrats," which developed a strong cult following after it was released on video. The 1995 romantic comedy is the second film in Smith's View Askewniverse series and the prequel to 1994's "Clerks," and now, 20 years later, Smith has confirmed that "Mallrats 2" is in the works.

When asked about rumors of a sequel for "Mallrats," the director confirmed to radio show Rock 102 Mornings with Shmonty & Carolina that he is working on it and said, "Yeah, that's what we're working on."

"It's half a script right now, and we're pulling our loot together. We've got until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we're going to be shooting," he explained.

The original film did not make a killing in the box office, as it reportedly grossed only a little more than $2 million back in 1995. But Smith appears to be unconcerned about the sequel suffering the same fate.

"Lately I've been doing this thing where I'm like, 'Do you want to do what's good for your career, or do you want to have fun?'" he continued. "Nobody's clamoring for a 'Mallrats' sequel, but I would love to make one. It's been like 20 years."

Smith first hinted at the "Mallrats" sequel last week on Twitter as he gave an update about the films that he's working on.

"We shoot CLERKS III in May," he wrote. "HIT SOMEBODY shoots September to Christmas. Then in February 2016 we do MOOSE JAWS. But after that? I smell a rat…"

Confirmed to return for "Mallrats 2" is Shannen Doherty, who will be reprising her role as Rene Mosier, Michael Rooker, Stan Lee, Jason Mewes and Smith himself as Silent Bob.

On March 24, Smith announced via Twitter that Jason Lee will also be back to reprise his role as Brodie. "Brodie is back! Jason Lee's going to the mall y'all! 6 more to go!"

It is speculated that the "6" that Smith is referring to are original cast members Claire Forlani, Jeremy London, Joey Lauren Adams, Ethan Suplee, Renee Humphrey, and Ben Affleck.

No release date has been given for "Mallrats 2" as of the moment.
