Man Stabbed in Post Office After Allegedly Cutting in Line

Ray A. Young has been charged with attempted murder after repeatedly stabbing a man inside a post office in Maryland. He has been ordered held on a $500,000 bond, pending further investigation.

Young entered the small post office on Thursday, when he saw a man allegedly cut in line, according to police and eyewitnesses. The victim, still unnamed by authorities, stated that when Young approached him to complain, he pulled out a knife and started stabbing him.

As horrified patrons watched, two female postal employees grabbed a can of pepper-spray and attempted to separate the two men. Police credit the women with "preventing further injury to the victim."

Young finally relented and went to his truck to retrieve another weapon before returning to continue his attack. Patrons yelled that they had already called police, which scared Young off.

Police were able to take Young into custody during a routine traffic stop and immediately charged him with attempted murder. His victim was stabbed in the chest, forearm, biceps and shoulder, and was hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery.

"I was fighting with a guy," Young told authorities. "He cut the line and I said something to him. We started tussling. He punched me and hit me with his head. I was defending myself. His wife or someone pepper-sprayed me. Maybe I should have stayed home. I'm too old for this stuff."

Young, 67, has worked for the government before, and friends told The Washington Post that something must have set him off on this day.

"We have lived next door to him for more than 10 years, and I've never seen him be aggressive or volatile any way," Mary Anne Darling said.

"I hope Ray gets the help it seems like he might need," Darling added.
