McLaren 720S Release Date, Specs News: Second-Gen Supercar Equipped With Innovative Folding Driver Display

The second-generation McLaren Super Series, rumored to be called the 720S, is just one day away from its official unveiling at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show.

Though the McLaren 720S has yet to be revealed, the British automaker recently released a preview of the upcoming supercar's interiors, specifically a new, innovative digital instrument cluster called Folding Driver Display.

The driver interface, when combined with the new Central Infotainment Screen, enables the driver to receive a comprehensive range of information via two high-definition screens. The folding digital instrument display is highlighted by aluminum switches and leather upholstery.

"The Folding Driver Display is revolutionary in offering both a choice of information shown and physical position, seamlessly complementing driver preferences while at the same time furnishing a glorious piece of engineering theatre," said Mark Vinnels, executive director of Product Development at McLaren Automotive.

When the vehicle is unlocked, Full Display Mode is activated and the Folding Driver Display shows a wide range of information via an upright touchscreen, the format of which depends on the second-generation supercar's driving mode — Comfort, Sport or Track.

Meanwhile, Slim Display Mode only shows essential information in a single strip. It can be manually selected by pressing a button or can be automatically activated when linked to active dynamics functionality. This type of display is ideal for drivers who want to lessen distractions while driving.

In another teaser, McLaren also detailed the incredible stopping performance of the upcoming 720S.

The second Super Series is already quite impressive as it is able to go from 0 to 124 miles per hour (mph) in 7.8 seconds. Now, the automaker has revealed that the successor to the first Super Series, the McLaren 650S supercar, can brake from 124 mph to 0 in 4.6 seconds and 117 meters.

The supercar's exceptional stopping power is the result of rigorous testing and the use of lighter but stiffer components as well as bespoke Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, which provide six percent more grip compared to the McLaren 650S.

More details for the second-generation Super Series will be revealed during McLaren's press conference on Tuesday, March 7.
