Mississippi Riot Breaks Out In Prison, 40 Escaped Says Source (VIDEO)

A riot broke out Sunday in a low-security Mississippi prison which resulted in the death of one prison guard and at least eight others being injured.

The riot involved dozens of inmates, who took hostages and wreaked havoc Sunday afternoon at Adams County Correctional Center in southwest Mississippi. The prison holds mostly undocumented immigrants according to authorities, although no reason has been given as to what caused the premeditated outbreak.

The riot remained contained within the prison's walls and no inmates escaped, Adams County Correction Center spokeswoman Emilee Beach said. The riot was broken down by Sunday night and all inmates were searched before being returned to their cells.

One security guard, 23, was left dead after suffering "blunt trauma to the head," Adams County Coroner James Lee told CNN news.

Five other security guards were injured according to the Associated Press, in addition to three other inmates, although none suffered life threatening injuries.

Unable to handle the threat alone, 45-55 units from the Mississippi Highway Patrol were also sent to the correctional facility to help mediate the riot, Rusty Boyd, a spokesman with the Patrol told CNN.

Some suggested that the riot was a result of inhumane conditions within the prison walls that officials had done little to mitigate in the past.

"Condolences to the family of the deceased guard but his blood and the blood of the inmates and injured staff members are on the hands of Haley Barbour, MDOC Commissioner Christopher Epps, Bennie Thompson and all the state officials who let CCA continue to operate here in Mississippi despite the many riots, injuries and inhumane conditions that the staff (and inmates) are forced to deal with," an unidentified user stated on the CNN blog.

One man, who claimed to be related to the deceased guard, suggested that the situation had not been fully disclosed.

"It is WAY bigger than the local news is letting on, especially the law enforcement saying there are no escaped inmates when there are actually over 40 at this very moment," Jason Clark.

He also stated, "My little cousin is the guard who lost his life."
