'Modern Family' Season 9 Spoilers: Jay Prepares Family for Eventual Demise

Jay (Ed O'Neill) is preparing his kids and grandkids for his eventual demise in the upcoming season of "Modern Family."

In the premiere episode titled "Lake Life," the synopsis reveals that Jay will plan a big family outing to create more memories. The Pritchett patriarch will bring everyone on a vacation on a houseboat near a lake. He wants to spend as much time as he can with them before he passes away. While Jay's morbid thoughts will definitely exasperate his children, they will agree to the plan since their father never accepts no for anything. They will hope, though, that Jay will get to be with them for many years to come.

Meanwhile, husbands Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) will have their share of obstacles. Mitch will run into an ex-lover and the meeting will stir up old wounds that he hoped to never remember again. Cam, on the other hand, will have the mundane task of staying out of the sun at all cost. As for Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen), the couple will take the opportunity to be more adventurous. While the adults are having fun, the youngsters will find themselves disappointed with the trip.

Fans of the series are looking forward to seeing the quirky family back on screen again. In a May interview with Deadline, Bowen looked back on how the series started eight years ago. According to her, it was a good feeling to see the viewers accepting the unconventional storylines they showed in the past. She hoped that the reception would continue to be positive in the future.

"People say we were cutting edge eight years ago," Bowen said. "And the fact that we're no longer cutting edge I consider a testament to how well the show has been accepted by a broad audience. The fact that people think it's old hat to have a gay couple, and they're complaining, 'Well they're both white!' and you're like, 'Yes, but eight years ago they were gay and that was the first thing that people noticed.' The fact that they aren't noticing their gayness, that's great, that's a stride, that's steps forward, that's wonderful."

"Modern Family" season 9 will air on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 9 p.m. EDT on ABC.
