NBA Trade News: Kevin Martin Rumored To Be On The Trading Block
Kevin Martin represents a lot of players in the NBA right now — a reliable offensive weapon who can provide scoring every night, but also someone who seems to be so unlucky when it comes to finding a home. A journeyman as many would it call it, Martin has been in the league for more than a decade now, but he really hasn't been with a team long enough to carve out his own niche.
When the Minnesota Timberwolves offered him a contract, the idea was to provide veteran leadership and an additional scoring punch to a young team comprising future league stars, such as Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns, Shabazz Muhammad, and Ricky Rubio. But the thing is, just like his other stints, this again would go down as a failed experiment. The team is reportedly shopping him to other teams in the hope of getting a draft pick or another young player to further boost their rebuilding efforts.
The trade deadline is very near, and while the Wolves don't look desperate in trading him, it's quite intriguing to speculate as to where Martin is actually headed.
At first look, it does not make a lot of sense if Minnesota trades him right now, going with the fact that the team has the fourth worst record in the league. If they intend to win more games and climb up the standings, they need someone who can score the ball for them. Martin is obviously that someone.
However, they actually might not be that interested in winning after all. The team is in rebuilding mode, so winning right now is not the primary objective. Should they be given very enticing offers to give up Martin, they would do so without reservations.
SheridanHoops first reported that the Dallas Mavericks are actually pursuing the sharpshooting veteran. Well, it actually makes a lot of sense considering that the Mavs are trying to be relevant in the Western Conference and Mark Cuban does not really mind spending his money for the sake of giving his team a fighting chance against the best in the conference.
Aside from the Mavs, the Milwaukee Bucks were reportedly pursuing Martin as well, back when he was still a free agent in 2013. However, that is almost three years ago, and the Bucks are a completely different team right now.
And of course there's the Miami Heat, who surprisingly are hanging by the thread in the Eastern Conference right now at the eighth spot. The team is a formidable defensive team, but its offense is something that needs improvement. Should they want another push right before the playoffs, then they should be putting in the right plan to get Martin in a trade. They pretty sure have the young players to consider sending to Minnesota.
