Next they were tasked to face number one seed Villanova in the third round. Few gave them a real chance against the Wildcats but NC State came in prepared. Four of their five starters finished the game with double digits in scoring, led by Lacey with 17 as the Wolfpack shot 45 percent from the field.
Furthermore, they limited the Wildcats' offense to just 31 percent shooting and out-rebounded the Big East giants 45-32.
Meanwhile, it was a total team effort that helped Louisville beat UC Irvine in the second round. Quentin Snider made two free throws to give Louisville the lead and Terry Rozier made a crucial defensive stop to secure their place into the third round. Wayne Blackshear topped the team in scoring with 19, with Snider finishing a close second with 16.
Next was a date with the fifth seed Northern Iowa Panthers. The Cardinals kept their composure from their previous game to take a nine-point lead at the half and carry it over to eventually win 66-53. Rozier had another impressive performance with 25 points, while Montrezl Harrell added 14 points and six rebounds in the victory.
