'Once Upon a Time' season 5 plot and cast news: Darker Swan to be led by Rumpelstiltskin

The upcoming season of "Once Upon a Time" will see a darker Emma Swan, played by Jennifer Morrrison, who will allegedly be mentored by Rumpelstiltskin, played by Robert Carlyle.

Recently, Entertainment Weekly released a sneak peek into the fifth season, revealing Rumpelstiltskin aiding Emma with her new powers. It was noted by executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz that they believe there is no better teacher than Carlyle's character.

At the San Diego Comic-Con 2015, actor Carlyle also shared details about what his character will be facing in season 5. He explained that Rumpelstiltskin is not in a coma, just his counterpart Mr. Gold. He said that Gold has a white heart, while Rumplestiltskin doss not, making them two different people. The upcoming season is also expected to introduce a new character from Pixar, Merida from "Brave." She will be played by Scottish actress Amy Manson, who will deeply affect Emma's life, according to Deadline.

Kitsis stated that she will make her debut in the first season. Horowitz also explained, "In the season premiere, there's a lot that happens, including Merida and giving you a taste of what we plan to do with Camelot. It's certainly a part of Emma's journey as the Dark Swan and dealing with her darkness." They also teased that Merida might become a quick fan favorite, with her fun-loving attitude. They shared that ever since the release of Brave, they have loved the character and have been excited to introduce her to the show.

Other characters such as Evil Queen Regina Mills (Lana Parrilla), Captain Hook (Colin O'Donoghue), Henry Daniel Mills (Jared S Gilmore), Prince Charming aka David Nolan (Josh Dallas), Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin), and Merlin (Elliot Knight) are expected to return for the season.

Once Upon a Time season 5 will air on Sept. 27.
