'Pokémon GO' Evolution Guide: How to Evolve Gen 1, Gen 2 Pokémon

Now that "Pokémon GO" has incorporated Gen 2 Pokémon from the Johto region, there are plenty more options for evolution. However, there are a number of things to consider when choosing to evolve Pokémon.

First of all, a Pokémon's combat power is very important when it comes to battling against other Pokémon. If the CP is high, then there is a bigger chance of coming out victorious in a fight.

Sometimes, trainers catch or hatch a Pokémon that already has an impressive CP. Other times, Pokémon need powering up and evolving to get a higher CP.

Candy is something that can be used to evolve a Pokémon. Evolving a Pokémon is harder because a specific type and number of Candy is required for each Pokémon. Stardust, on the other hand, can be used in a more general way to power up Pokémon.

With the introduction of Gen 2 Pokémon, there are some that require special items in order to evolve. According to Eurogamer, Pokémon like Slowking and Politoed need King's Rock, while Bellossom and Sunflora need a Sun Stone. Porygon2, Kingdra, Scizor and Steelix also require special items.

These special items can be acquired by activating PokéStops, but their drop rates are unknown. However, there have been some dedicated players who have observed that the drop rate of special evolution items may be related to the Buddy Pokémon that a trainer walks with. This theory has not been proven to be entirely effective, though.

For new players who are not familiar with the Pokémon world, a Gen 1 Pokémon Evolution chart can be viewed here. It also includes the amount of Pokémon Candy needed to evolve all the types.

Niantic has also launched a nest migration feature, which highlights areas wherein certain types of Pokémon are more prevalent. The nests change every two weeks, though, so be sure to check back for the latest updates.
