'Pokémon GO' Game: Trainers Spot Shiny Monsters as Devs Announce Water Festival Event

Trainers can begin catching shiny versions of some great Pokémon monsters as Niantic Labs announced the start of the global Water Festival game event.

Just a few days ago, "Pokémon GO" trainers shared their experience of catching shiny, golden versions of Magikarp that evolve to a glistening Gyarados. The discovery came in shortly after the announcement of the said water-themed event.

Though the announcement from Niantic Labs did not mention anything about shiny and golden water-type Pokémon, the timing of when it was spotted obviously coincided with the start of the Water Festival event. Reports speculate that it is somehow related to the game update. It is also possible that more shiny variants of other water-type Pokémon will become available in the coming days.

Magikarp has been described as "a pathetic excuse for a Pokèmon that is only capable of flopping and splashing. This behavior prompted scientists to undertake research into it." Though that does not sound very impressive, with 400 Magikarp Candies, trainers can have it evolved to a Gyarados which is a much more significant monster.

Gyarados is both a water and a flying type of monster with a maximum of 2,688 combat power, 192 base attack and 196 base defense. It is important to note though that Gyarados can be relatively weaker when battling an electric-type Pokémon like Raichu and Jolteon.

The Water Festival event on "Pokémon GO" started on Wednesday, March 22 at 4 p.m. EDT. In the same announcement, Niantic Labs promised, "You'll be more likely to encounter Magikarp, Squirtle, Totodile, and their Evolutions all around the world."

"Additionally, when you're out exploring areas where Water-type Pokémon more commonly appear, you'll have a greater chance to encounter several of the Water-type Pokémon originally discovered in the Johto region, and maybe... you might even encounter Lapras," Niantic Labs further teased.

Apart from having an easier time catching interesting water-type Pokémon, the Water Festival event will also bring in the newest avatar on "Pokémon GO" called the Magikarp Hat.

However, the Water Festival is a limited-time event. The game update is only available until Wednesday, March 29 at 4 p.m. EDT.
