'Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon' to Be the Last Pokémon Games on the 3DS

It's the sunset days for the Nintendo 3DS, and nothing drives the point home quite like a console-selling series suggesting that their latest game could be their last on the platform. GameFreak director Shigeru Ohmori explains how they believe they have already pushed the handheld to its limits.

In a recent interview with IGN, Ohmori explained how "Pokémon Ultra Sun" and "Pokémon Ultra Moon" titles could be the "culmination" of their series for the Nintendo 3DS. Along the way, he makes it clear that the series needs more room to grow, perhaps on the Nintendo Switch.

"When we were making Pokemon X and Y, we really were trying to push the 3DS system to its absolute limits - which is what we thought we'd done," he began, noting that even with the earlier "Pokémon Sun" And "Pokémon Moon," they were already stretching what the console was capable of.

"With Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon," Ohmori notes. "We've tried to eke that out more and really, really push the system to its absolute limits, and we're now feeling that perhaps this is the maximum of what we can get out," the director added.

"So we're really treating Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the culmination of our work with the 3DS system," he explains. While they could be releasing spin-offs and add-ons for the games, the next core games of the series are presumably moving on to the more powerful Nintendo Switch.

"Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon" are enhanced remakes of the "Pokémon Sun and Moon" games for the same platform. The overhaul is also Nintendo's way of exploring the idea of doing away with Pokémon gyms, and focusing instead on scripted challenges as they are laid out on the Alola islands.

Game Freak has already announced that a new Pokémon title is already in development for the Nintendo Switch, according to Digital Trends.

"Pokémon Ultra Sun" and "Pokémon Ultra Moon" are coming out for the Nintendo 3DS on Nov. 17.
