Power Rangers Movie Premiere Date, Cast Rumors: Reboot to Be Released in 2016
Just when one thought that July of 2016 cannot get any better with the release of films such as "Angry Birds," "Independence Day 2" and the sequel to "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," another movie reboot that is sure to thrill a lot of 1990s kids all over the world. Lionsgate has greenlit a reboot of "Power Rangers," and it is slated to premiere on July 22, 2016.
The film will tell the story of the origins of the Power Rangers as a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves "infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world," according to Variety.
Though no director has been hired for the film yet, the website reports that Roberto Orci will be onboard as executive producer, and penning the script is a dream team of writers composed of Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur, Ashley Miller and Zach Stentz.
Since the studio officially announced that the "Power Rangers" movie reboot is a go, there have been many speculations as to who will be cast as part of the 5-person team. Recently, MTV reported that Chloe Grace Moretz has signed on for the part of the Pink Ranger. Other actors such as Liam Neeson, Tom Hiddleston, Taylor Lautner, Liam Hemsworth and Jack Gleeson are rumored to be part of the film.
Many entertainment sites such as E! Online have started building a list of their dream cast members, mentioning a lot of up and coming young stars such as Elle Fanning, Michael B. Jourdan, Ansel Elgort, and Hailee Steinfeld among others.
The film is set to compete with Guy's Ritchie's "King Arthur" — which will also be released on July 22 — which will star Charlie Hunnam in the titular role.
