Samsung Odyssey News: New Windows Mixed Reality Headset Features Impressive Display

Samsung has just announced a joint venture with Microsoft into the Mixed Reality segment with their own headset and motion controllers. Tech media has been thoroughly impressed by this new offer from Samsung, especially when it comes to the display quality.

This Windows Mixed Reality Headset from Samsung features an OLED display, a technology the Korean phone maker has been a leader in for the past few years. This expertise enables the company to equip the headset with an overall 2,880 by 1,600-pixel resolution that can be driven up to 90 Hertz.

The result was described as simply stunning, as media reviews from outlets like Engadget reported. Each eye gets a 3.5-inch AMOLED display at 1,440 by 1,600-pixel resolution, and the output is seamless, without the distracting "screen door" effect from headsets with lower resolutions.

The color accuracy is very spot on as well, and the performance is already on par with the Oculus Rift even with this unit being Samsung's first VR rollout for Windows Mixed Reality. The controllers themselves are a good compromise between the best features of the Oculus Touch and the HTC Vive motion grips, as The Verge reports.

Oculus Rift might have the content advantage for now, but this joint venture between Samsung and Microsoft focuses on convenience. The positional tracking tech inside the headset itself does away with the need for the glut of cables like in the Rift and other products out in the market today.

The Samsung Odyssey Windows Mixed Reality headset is now available for pre-order on Microsoft's online shop. The kit comes with a headset and two motion controllers for about $500. It is set to ship out on Nov. 6.
