'Scandal' Season 7 Spoilers: Is Olivia Prepared to Sacrifice Fitz for Absolute Power?
Olivia (Kerry Washington) will do anything to protect her position in the next season of "Scandal."
In an interview with Variety, Washington spoke about how her character's relationships with other people might become her downfall. According to her, Olivia is at the stage where she cannot allow scandal to touch her name. As the Chief of Staff in the White House, the former fixer is considered to be the most powerful woman in Washington. Even Mellie (Bellamy Young) as the president will not be able to control her. In fact, the POTUS will make sure that Olivia will stay happy with her, knowing the kind of power that the other woman wields.
"Olivia's sitting in the highest seat," Washington said in the interview. "Anything that jeopardizes her ability to show up for the republic is potentially a problem. Relationships are not the most important thing right now, unless that relationship serves and enhances her ability to wield her power in the ways that she needs to."
With Olivia concerned about her position, speculations are rife that she will end up sacrificing her relationship with Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) to gain more power. In the past, Olivia's name was dragged in the mud when it was exposed that she and Fitz were having an affair. The public's attention soon shifted from the scandal, but there are still many who remember how Olivia was revealed to be a home wrecker. She may be in love with Fitz, but her thirst for power may force her to cut ties with him and move on.
Meanwhile, Olivia and Mellie are expected to work with Cyrus (Jeff Perry), especially now that he is vice president. The promo photos show the three of them in a conference at the White House. Mellie looks content in showing Cyrus some papers while Olivia watches from the sideline. When Mellie leaves, the two share a look that speaks volume of what they are thinking. It is obvious that Cyrus is just biding his time until he can make a move against Mellie.
"Scandal" season 7 will premiere on Oct. 5 at 9 p.m. EDT on ABC.
