'Sing-Off' Winners Committed Nominated at 2012 NAACP Image Awards
The 43rd NAACP Image Awards has announced "Sing-Off" season two winners, Committed as a 2012 nominee for Outstanding New Artist.The multi-cultural awards show celebrates the supernumerary achievements and performances of African Americans in the arts -- including those in television, recording, literature, film, writing, and directing.
Committed earned America's adoration while appearing on NBC's "The Sing-Off." The reality competition series introduced the acappella group to over nine million viewers, and with their incredible lead vocals, riveting stage presence, and devotion to their faith -- received a record number of votes.
"One of the things that made us want to be on 'The Sing-Off' is that it would be a great opportunity for people to know who we are and what we are about," said Maurice Staple of Committed in a press release.
Upon winning "The Sing-Off," Committed earned a contract with Epic Records and $100,000, as well as exposure to a national audience. The gospel group got its start in 2003 in Orlando, Fla., at Forest Lake Academy.
"Committed actually started as a quartet and the group expanded into a sextet in 2005," explained group member Geston Pierre. "I was a senior in high school when Tommy [Gervais] and I joined. After we graduated high school, we went to Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama and Maurice and Therry [Thomas] joined in 2005, then DJ and Robbie [Pressley] joined three years ago."
In addition to their NAACP Image Award nomination, the group will appear on PBS's television special, "Pa's Fiddle," performing alongside Natalie Grant, Randy Travis, and Ashton Shepherd, and many others. The special episode is scheduled to premiere June 2, 2010.
"Pa's Fiddle" will be available on CD and DVD as fundraising purposes for PBS contributors following the premiere.
The 43rd NAACP Imade Awards will broadcast Friday, Feb. 17, at 10:00 p.m., EST on NBC.
