Square Enix Cancels 'Pre-Order' Program For 'Deus Ex: Mankind Divided'

Almost two months after Square Enix revealed the release date of the much-awaited action role-playing game "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" and the different type of pre-order program that went with the game which it called "Augment Your Pre-Order" program, the publisher has announced that it is cancelling the pre-order program.

An IGN report called the program "highly controversial" because it employed a different approach in getting people to pre-order. Those who pre-order get to choose the incentives they will get and these incentives get better if higher pre-orders were received. The biggest bonus they listed was that they would release the game four days earlier if a target number of pre-orders was reached. Essentially, the more people who pre-order will bring more incentives.

This program, however, became heavily criticized by gamers and fans of the game. Another report in Tech Times cited that the backlash that the plan received was "immense and brutal," and with this recent announcement, Square Enix took this criticism seriously. In a blog post, Square Enix had this to say: "When it was first conceived, we wanted the program to give you more choice about what you received in terms of pre-order incentives... We quickly noticed that this approach created even more frustration than before, resulting in a resounding amount of negative feedback."

In place of the old program, those who pre-order the game or buy a Day One edition of the game will have access to the incentive content listed. This seemed to be an easier pill to swallow especially since a lot of gamers are already wary of pre-ordering games. The game's release date will still be on February 23, 2016.

The game was first unveiled at the E3 2015 and based on previews, it looked like a much better game than earlier games of the franchise. It was initially praised for "re-tuned combat, a tighter story, more choices to make."
