'Suicide Squad 2' Film News, Release Date: Mel Gibson Eyed to Direct Upcoming Sequel

"Suicide Squad" may be regarded by some as having been a critical failure, but that is not stopping DC from making a sequel. And while David Ayer was the one who directed the first film, he may not return to helm the second.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. is looking for a new director to fill in for "Suicide Squad 2, and among those being considered is Mel Gibson, who has had his fair share of directing credits. Gibson even won the Academy Award for Best Director for his 1995 film, "Braveheart," which he also starred in.

Other names are also included in the list, though. "Zombieland" director Ruben Fleischer, "Warm Bodies" director Jonathan Levine and "Safe House" director Daniel Espinosa are being considered as well. The list is not final and there is still a chance that more names will be added.

However, a source apparently told the media outlet that Gibson is the favorite, despite some insiders saying that there is no front-runner. Gibson may take the job too, since the publication states that he is eager to work with Will Smith, who plays Floyd Lawton aka Deadshot.

There has also been talk of "Suicide Squad 2" getting an R-rating. With the success of 2016's "Deadpool" starring Ryan Reynolds and the upcoming "Logan" starring Hugh Jackman, superhero films are getting bolder and more willing to acquire an R-rating. "Deadpool" certainly proved that a superhero movie can be rated R and still kill at the box office.

"For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here," Ayer said of "Suicide Squad" in an interview with MTV News in April 2016. "It would be worth lobbying for."

And for Gibson, directing an R-rated film will be nothing new, having helmed the controversial 2004 film, "The Passion of the Christ," which was both a critical and commercial hit.

"Suicide Squad 2" does not have a release date yet.
