'Super Mario 64' Gameplay News: Modders Transform Classic Title to Multiplayer Game
Dedicated modders have recently launched a new and downloadable version of "Super Mario 64" that allowed players to experience the game in multiplayer mode.
Familiar names in the modding scene, Kaze Emanuar, Melonspeedruns and Marshivolt, are the ones who deserve the credit for this newly released game version.
The 1996-released title is Nintendo's take on the franchise as a platform video game. It was the first-ever "Super Mario" designed with 3D graphics and was later named the best-selling Nintendo 64 game with more than 11 million copies sold worldwide.
While there were several improvements applied to "Super Mario 64," it remained a strictly single-player video game. However, more than a decade since its original launch, some modders teamed up to offer the game in an entirely new set up – introducing the multiplayer mode to the title.
The modded version is officially called "Super Mario 64 Online." It can accommodate up to 24 players running around Princess Peach's kingdom. Since the number of players in one game session has jumped from one to 24, modders also added a wide array of playable characters other than Mario.
The list of new characters includes Waluigi, Princess Peach, Princess Rosalina, and more. According to reports, the modders took the extra effort to provide unique abilities for every character as well.
In the video teaser shared by Kaze Emanuar, the playable characters were weirdly seen running side by side one another, which makes them look as if they were racing against each other. Meanwhile, among all of the characters, Waluigi gets the most air time in the trailer. At one point, players will also see Princess Peach going through obstacles set up around her castle.
Players can now start downloading "Super Mario 64 Online" for free. However, note that the game plays in ROM so having emulator software is also required to access the game.
Meanwhile, "Super Mario" fans will know that Nintendo is not a huge fan of modded versions of the franchise's games. So, to anyone who wants to experience the game, they better download "Super Mario 64 Online" as soon as they can before the video game giant pulls the DMCA card.
