'The Get Down' Season 2 Release Date, Spoilers and Updates: Baz Luhrmann Shuts Down Cancellation Rumors; Next Season in the Works
Despite rumors of cancellation amid poor ratings, Netflix's hip-hop drama "The Get Down" seems to be doing just fine, and is well on its way to Season 2, according to executive producer Baz Luhrmann. In an interview with The New York Daily News, Luhrmann shot down rumors that his show had "flopped" and that Jaden Smith, who plays Marcus "Dizzee" Kipling, had died in an apparent suicide.
According to Luhrmann, "The Get Down" cast and crew are currently busy shooting for its second season, including Jaden Smith himself. He noted that contrary to previous reports, the show was actually doing "extraordinarily well" and is enjoying a large fan base. He also debunked rumors that "The Get Down" was the most expensive show Netflix has produced at $122 million.
What's Currently Happening
"The Get Down's" official Twitter account has been posting several updates on the current goings-on behind the camera. On Sept. 30, writer and supervising producer Nelson George tweeted a photo of the crew preparing for a new routine for the show, featuring Skylan Brooks, Jaden Smith and TJ Brown.
In an interview with Variety, Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos also expressed his willingness to go all out for shows like "The Get Down" as an expression of its commitment to "brand-defining, tentpole shows." While he acknowledged that the hip-hop drama was indeed expensive, Sarandos and the online streaming network seemed unperturbed by it, saying their audience is global and they certainly have the resources to "invest heavily" to a point that most networks simply couldn't keep up to.
What to expect from 'The Get Down' Season 2
With both the producers and the networks' commitment to bring the show further, fans of "The Get Down" can certainly expect a more glorious Season 2. The show will be doing a time jump to the 1980s, the era that spawned Prince and Michael Jackson, as well as the fall of disco.
The show will be bringing in more characters, with Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola and Jaden Smith still very much at the center. A report from DNAInfo said Cast It Talent, a recruitment agency, had posted new roles for "The Get Down", but had promptly taken it down since. However, a brief glimpse on the new casting calls revealed that the show was looking for black and Latino extras from ages 18 to 21, as well as new hip-hop dancers of both genders and ages.
No word out yet for "The Get Down" Season 2, but the second part of Season 1 will be airing in 2017.
