The Rouge: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin has been the source of much gossip about Palin's past with stories of the former vice presidential candidate having been intimate with a NBA basketball star Glen Rice, smoking marijuana and dabbling with cocaine.

The author spoke exclusively with Today's Show Savannah Guthrie earlier this month to discuss the authenticity of his book report. During the interview, McGinniss said, "People who know her best like her the least" and defended his accusation of cocaine abuse.

"You talk to someone who snorted it with her and you talk to many of Todd's friends who describe him as having been at the end of the straw frequently in his youth. I'm not saying that Todd and Sarah Palin, today, abuse cocaine or even use it. But, there's no question that they both did, at one point in their lives," McGinniss told the NBC reporter.

McGinniss also describes Palin as "at best she's a hypocrite at worst she's a vindictive hypocrite."

Palin’s attorney John Tiemessen reportedly sent a letter to Crown Publishing Group on Monday threatening a lawsuit, according to ABC News.

In the letter, Tiemessen highlights an e-mail message that McGinniss reportedly sent a blogger in January trying to substantiate rumors about Palin.

In his blog about his book, McGinniss responds to some critical reviews about The Rogue: "I got behind the mask. I did find the real Sarah Palin. But it's a whole lot easier to try to kill the messenger than it is to read the message."
