2018 Lexus LS 500h Release Date, Specs News: Multi-Stage Hybrid Powertrain Confirmed; Sedan All Set for Debut at Geneva

Toyota's luxury division, Lexus, has confirmed the hybrid powertrain of the all-new LS 500h ahead of its official debut at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show this March.

As initially speculated by previous reports, the 2018 Lexus LS 500h will indeed be powered by the latest version of the automaker's Multi-Stage Hybrid System, which was first seen in the LC 500h luxury coupe.

The high-performance hybrid powertrain features a 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine with a Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) system. It produces 295 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. There are also two 59-horsepower electric motors. Overall, the hybrid system delivers a total output of 354 horsepower.

According to AutoCar, the engine will be located at the front of the vehicle while the battery pack that powers the electric motors will be placed at the back. Each electric motor will power one front wheel while the engine will take control of the rear wheels.

The Multi-Stage Hybrid System also comes with a four-stage shift device that incorporates an electronic continuously variable transmission (ECVT) and a four-speed automatic gearbox. It produces performance similar to the 10-speed transmission of the LS 500.

The use of this particular powertrain leads to improvements in throttle response and fuel efficiency. It allows the 2018 Lexus LS 500h to provide owners a smooth, quiet and sophisticated driving experience. It also enables high-speed cruising at speeds of up to 87 miles per hour (mph) — even if the petrol engine is not in use.

In terms of design, Lexus previously released a promotional image for the upcoming hybrid vehicle which shows that it will not differ significantly from its non-hybrid counterpart — the flagship LS luxury sedan. As such, both cars are expected to have the same dimensions and standard features.

The 2018 LS 500h will be introduced during Lexus' press conference on Tuesday, March 7 at 12:45 p.m. CET/6:45 a.m. EST. The Geneva Motor Show will be held at the Palexpo convention center from March 9 to 19.
