2018 Range Rover Velar Release Date, Specs, Price News: All-New Luxury SUV Features Modern Design, Latest Technologies
Range Rover has taken the wraps off Velar, the fourth member of the British automaker's luxury sports utility vehicle (SUV) lineup.
The 2018 Range Rover Velar, which now sits in between Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, comes with its own distinct appearance that is tied to the original Range Rover prototype. But, at the same time, the all-new midsize SUV was built using latest thinking in design, engineering and technology.
"Velar brings unprecedented glamour, modernity and elegance to the Range Rover family. It is a vehicle that has emotionally charged DNA and unquestionable pedigree. A new type of Range Rover for a new type of customer," said Gerry McGovern, chief design officer for Land Rover.
The 2018 Range Rover Velar features a clean and elegant design language with optimized proportions. It was designed with a reductionist philosophy in mind, wherein components are inert until the driver or passengers choose to interact with them. Notable exterior features include a bold grille, flush door handles that retract, LED headlamps and copper-colored accents on the bonnet vents, front bumper blades and side vents.
The recently unveiled luxury SUV also comes with tech-focused interiors highlighted by the new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. It is comprised of two 10-inch touchscreen displays powered by an Intel quad-core processor with 60 GB of solid-state drive (SSD) memory. The second display remains hidden until it is needed.
The next-generation infotainment system features an intuitive interface, which is similar to the one used by smartphones and tablets. It comes with a digital personal assistant that learns and anticipates the need of the driver and an Ethernet network with a Wi-Fi hotspot that can connect up to eight devices.
The 2018 Range Rover Velar uses a light yet stiff aluminum-intensive body with pioneering air suspension technologies and an all-wheel-drive system that allows the vehicle to handle all kinds of terrain.
The luxury SUV will be offered with five powertrain options including a 2.0-liter Ingenium diesel engine that delivers 180 horsepower and a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine that produces 380 horsepower. A 300-horsepower Ingenium petrol engine will also be added later this year.
The engine will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 2018 Range Rover Velar is scheduled to go on sale in the summer. Pricing for the all-new midsize SUV ranges from $50,895 to $78,095, depending on the trim and engine configuration. Meanwhile, a special First Edition variant will be available for the first year and it is priced at $90,295.
