Many of us tend to look at things we lack or are flawed in and try to improve in those areas. Here are 5 New Year's resolutions that can help improve your mental and physical health.

1. Stress Less

Try not to stress over unnecessary things in life by slowing down the pace. Don't cram yourself with a bunch of things, try and relax. Forget running errands all day and filling your schedule up. Use your free time to kick back and enjoy a movie, take a nice relaxing walk around the neighborhood.

2. Read the Bible

A great way to take time and relax while keeping in touch with God. Instead of watching your favorite TV show on a Tuesday night, review and try to memorize your favorite Bible verses. A new bible verse can help motivate you for 2014 and help you focus more on God instead of your problems.

3. Use Electronics Less

Smartphone's are a great way to keep in touch with friends and family constantly, but is also an addiction to many people. Try making it a habit to turn off all your electronics (computers, cell phones, tables) at least once a week and visit someone or meet for coffee instead of texting them. It may seem like you are making less connections, but at the same time it is allowing you to go deeper with certain individuals.

4. Remove Negativity Holding You Back

With the new year approaching, it is a perfect time to get rid of the negative elements in your life that are holding you back from being mentally sound. Some bad habits may include, drinking, smoking, gambling, over eating and cursing. Make a list of these negative habits and work at ridding yourself of them. Use prayer to help you with this.

5. Pray

Stop avoiding God like he's some type of cosmic kill joy looking to suck the fun out of your existence. Spend time in prayer and meditate on his Word. God can give you the peace that you won't receive anywhere else. Focusing on him can also improve your thought life drastically as his joy can overpower just about any negativity currently flowing through your head.
