Actor Hugh Jackman Saves Son From Riptide on Bondi Beach, Warns Swimmers of Danger

On- and off-screen, Hugh Jackman is the stuff of heroes. During a real-life drama though, he was not able to make use of his superhero powers. Still, what began as a leisurely day on the beach turned into a call for swift action for the dad of two. It was just a regular day out on the beach with his family when Jackman calmly rescues his son, Oscar, and another swimmer from a riptide that came up swiftly on Bondi Beach yesterday, Mach 27, reports say.

The Australian actor, who stars in the "X-Men" films as Wolverine, was filmed by Nine News as he was pulling on the arm of a man he pulled up from the water. The man had been holding on to a young girl. Several other swimmers were also making for shore after Jackman waved to them and warned them to safety.

In a tweet on their account, Nine News spreads the news of the actor's deed, "Hugh Jackman has been filmed rescuing his son and other swimmers from a rip at Sydney's Bondi Beach."

The water had been calm earlier that day but the dangerous currents suddenly came up. It became so rough after the rescue that the beach had to be closed for the safety of the beach-goers. Bondi Beach was not the only one that was closed that day because of the rough current.

Peter Adam, the man caught in the video with Jackman pulling on his arm, however, denies he was being saved by Jackman. He later told Nine News, "He wasn't rescuing me, I was assisting him to get his daughter up to the sandbar. He then grabbed my hand to get us up."

Still, without Jackman's warning, several more may have risked drowning in the water.

Born and bred in Sydney, the 47-year-old X-Men star had been in town to promote "Eddie the Eagle," his latest movie and had probably gone to the beach for a day of peace and quiet when he was thrust into the spotlight.
