'Age of Empires: Definitive Edition' News Updates: Re-release Pushed Back to 2018

"Age of Empires: Definitive Edition" was scheduled for released on Thursday, Oct. 19. But the developers behind the upcoming title issued a statement saying it will not be ready by then.

Unfortunately for those excited to get their hands on the Definitive Edition of the game, the team has not given a release date. It might as well launch next year.

"When we set out to re-release the original Age of Empires (as 'Age of Empires: Definitive Edition'), we had many debates over the extent of restoration that we should undertake," they said in a statement. "The challenge of re-releasing a classic is just that: it's a classic and it deserves to be treated with careful reverence."

The team says that they are still looking for ways to modernize the game in a way that does not sacrifice how players remember it.

"How can we modernize the game while preserving the fun, discovery, and magic of that first experience," the developers asked of their dilemma.

On the bright side, thousands of players should be invited to the closed beta, which will take place now until the re-release of "Age of Empires." The team is looking forward to feedback for the single-player campaign, multiplayer balance, and more to ensure that the title will be what players want. Additionally, they said that they will be actively engaging with players in the closed beta.

Again, the launch date for the Definitive Edition of "Age of Empires" has yet to be set. The team, however, is aiming to get the game out early in 2018.

"Age of Empire" is a collection of PC games. It was originally developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft.

The first title in the series debuted in 1997. The most recent title "Age of Empires II: Rise of the Rajas" was launched in December last year.
