Alison Sweeney Leaves 'Days of Our Lives' for 'General Hospital'

"Days of Our Lives" star Alison Sweeney is leaving the show that made her a star in order to work on another soap opera. Sweeney just announced that she will be directing "General Hospital."

"Super psyched," Sweeney tweeted to fans. "Working on the script right now!"

Sweeney is a soap vet, having starred on "Days" since 1993. Earlier this year she stunned fans by announcing that she was leaving to spend more time with her family. She has been busy working full-time on "Days" and another hit show, "The Biggest Loser." Now, though, Sweeney will spend her time behind the camera, which should allow her to spend more time with her husband and children.

"She's sort of paid her dues and spent some time learning the show," "General Hospital" executive producer Frank Valentini told Soap Opera Digest. "I asked her if she was available and she said yes."

Sweeney has also been working for the Hallmark Channel as an executive producer for its original movie, "Radio Hype." The actress will also star in the movie about a radio host who moves to Chicago and makes a huge life change. It's the second time that Sweeney has starred in a Hallmark film; she previous appeared in "Second Chances" with her "Days" brother, Greg Vaughan.

Even though Sweeney's main passion is acting and directing, she is also an accomplished author. She released her first novel, The Star Attraction in May 2013 and Scared Scriptless: A Novel last month.

Right now her character on "Days" is wreaking havoc on loved ones after discovering her fiancé had an affair with her cousin. Fans are loving every minute of Sweeney's acting during this time and storyline, knowing that it has been coming for quite some time. It's still unknown how her character will be written off the soap opera, but Sweeney told Ellen DeGeneres that she hopes she gets a happy ending.
