'American Idol' Reboot to Premiere in March 2018
It's no secret that "American Idol" is being revived on ABC, but now, the show's upcoming return finally has a release date.
It has been almost two years since "American Idol" bid farewell to the show's devoted fans after about 15 years on the air. But like most farewells in Hollywood, it didn't take long for the show to be revived and now, it had just been confirmed that "American Idol" is set to return on March 11, 2018.
Long-time host Ryan Seacrest was the one to break the news during his show "Live with Kelly and Ryan" last Monday, Nov. 6. It didn't take long before new judge Katy Perry followed up with her own confirmation on her Instagram page, sharing a "Star Wars" inspired photo of herself with fellow new judges music icon Lionel Richie, country star Luke Bryan, and Seacrest.
The show's revival had first been announced by ABC last May. Ben Sherwood, the co-chairman of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney|ABC released a statement saying: "American Idol on ABC...that has a nice ring to it. Idol is an entertainment icon, and now it will air where it belongs, in ABC's lineup of addictive fan favorites alongside Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor. America, get ready for the return of a bigger, bolder and better-than-ever Idol."
Auditions for the "American Idol" revival had already been going on for about three months now taking place at 23 different locations. It had also been revealed that when the show returns this coming March, it would open with a two-hour long premiere.
When "American Idol" returns, the ABC Network will officially become its new home after spending 15 seasons on FOX. Ever since the show began back in 2002, it has produced several big-name artists including the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert. However, during the latter part of the show's run, it had experienced a decline in ratings further complicated by the rise in popularity of its rival, NBC's "The Voice."
With its return this March, the producers are hoping to reignite the flames that had made "American Idol" successful while also putting refreshing new twists and faces.
