'Annabelle: Creation' Stands as a Prequel for Both 'Annabelle' and 'The Conjuring' Films

The upcoming "Annabelle: Creation" is not just a prequel to the first "Annabelle" movie that was released in 2014, but it also stands as a prequel for the 2013 horror flick, "The Conjuring."

The "Annabelle" movies are all spin-offs from "The Conjuring" horror franchise.

The premise of "Annabelle: Creation" is more or less explained in its newly released trailer wherein a doll maker and his wife tragically lost their own child and later took in a group of orphaned girls who are all under the supervision of a nun (Stephanie Sigman).

The events of the movie are set in the 1970s when the doll first exhibited signs of a demonic possession. As expected, the couple's home as well as the nun and children were terrorized by several hauntings caused by the doll - which apparently has set its sights on the kids.

Miranda Otto, who plays Lizzie Charlotte in the movie, explained that "the contact started small, but then it wanted permission to move into a doll so that it could be with us forever." This was the reason why the doll maker had to create Annabelle as a conduit.

James Wan, the director of "The Conjuring" films, worked as a producer for the "Annabelle" films.

However, the movie is helmed by a new director, David F. Sandberg, also the director of "Lights Out" which Wan also helped produce.

Sandberg replaced John R. Leonetti, who directed the first "Annabelle" film that centered around a couple who was expecting their first child. The husband (Ward Horton) gave his pregnant wife (Annabelle Wallis) the doll as a gift, but horror quickly ensued after a cult came inside their home and performed a ritual for the doll.

Aside from Sigman and Otto, "Annabelle: Creation" also stars Talitha Bateman, Anthony LaPaglia and Philippa Coulthard among others.

The movie was first set to premiere in May but was officially moved back to Aug. 11 since the original date would have it going up against sci-fi thriller "Alien: Covenant."
