Are Banks Open on Columbus Day 2017? What Establishments Are Closed During This Holiday?

Columbus Day marks a very important event in American history, and being a U.S. holiday, one can only expect several establishments to be closed on this day.

This Monday, Oct. 9, the US will once again be commemorating the day Christopher Columbus first landed on American soil. For many, this is also a day when financial establishments such as banks are closed. However what other establishments are closed during this US holiday?

First and foremost, banks are more likely to be closed during Columbus Day. In fact, Bank of America, PNC Bank and Santander have already announced that they will be closed for the day while Wells Fargo, Chase and TD Bank will stay open for their clients. It would be best for people to call and check with their local banks to see if they would be open.

Government offices will also be closed on Columbus Day. Many should expect to find federal and state offices to be closed. However, since not every state and municipality recognizes this holiday, some may choose to remain open.

On the other hand, stock markets are open during Columbus Day. Normally, both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq cease operations during holidays, Columbus Day and Veterans' Day are exemptions.

For families wishing to spend the holiday with mother nature, national parks remain open during Columbus Day. The only times that national parks close are during Christmas or New Year. But for those who wish to go out and eat instead, most restaurants and other food establishments often open on Columbus Day. The same thing can be said about stores and malls as the holiday gives them the perfect opportunity to make business.

Post offices will be closed during this day so people should not expect any mail to come in. However, drop off kiosks may be operational as UPS and FedEx would still be making deliveries during Columbus Day.
