'Arrow' Season 4 News, Spoilers: Katie Cassidy Speaks About Character's Death; EP Teases Next Black Canary

The recent death of Laurel Lance/Black Canary (Katie Cassidy) in the fourth season of "Arrow" may have come as a shock to fans of The CW's popular superhero series, especially as it deviated from the comic book source material, but Cassidy says that her character's death makes sense to her.

In the previous episode, titled "Eleven-Fifty-Nine," "Arrow" finally revealed who was in the mystery grave that was featured in a flash-forward earlier this season, which showed Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) of "The Flash" standing by a freshly dug grave. As Wednesday's episode confirmed, the grave's mystery occupant was Laurel, who was stabbed and killed by Damien Dahrk (Neal McDonough) as he escaped from Iron Heights Prison. Though Oliver was able to bring Laurel to a hospital, she unexpectedly died while recovering from surgery.

During a recent press screening, Cassidy said that Laurel has been on a "truly amazing" journey and that the show's writers have written well for the character. "I've had such an incredible arc so it made sense to me, creatively, that we've told Laurel's story," the actress said (via The Hollywood Reporter).

"It has come to an end in the Arrow-verse," she added.

According to Cassidy, she and the show's producers came to an understanding about Laurel's death and that she was OK with the decision to kill off the character.

"I think the shock value is good," she said. "It's such a jolt and such a turn in the story that it gives them so much more to do and places to go with it."

As for whether or not a new iteration of Black Canary could someday appear in the series, executive producer Marc Guggenheim told the press (via THR), "I don't know if I'd say [the Black Canary title] is up for grabs."

Though the "Arrow" boss admitted that he has not discussed the possibility of another Black Canary with the show's other producers, he did cite the version of Green Arrow who appeared in "Legends of Tomorrow" and said that "Arrow" exists in a world where mantles are taken up by multiple people.

"I personally like the idea that DC Comics, all the comics, they all have the concept of legacy," he said.

"Arrow" airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
