'Arrow' Season 4 Spoilers: Felicity Smoak Does Not Turn Into Oracle, 'Arrow' Executive Producer Reveals
On Sunday, the DC fandom was all abuzz with the news that Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), Oliver Queen's/Green Arrow's (Stephen Amell) fiancee who was critically wounded when the limo that she and Oliver were riding in got shot at by Damien Darhk's (Neal McDonough) men in the fall finale of "Arrow" Season 4, may take on the role of Oracle when the popular series returns this month. Oracle is the wheelchair-bound alter ego of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in the pre-"Flashpoint" DC Universe. In the DC Comics, Gordon became Oracle after her spine was damaged while fighting The Joker.
Fan speculation about Smoak becoming Oracle started when an Australian TV spot for "Arrow" Season 4 was uploaded to YouTube by a fan. In the teaser, Donna Smoak, Felicity's mother, tells Oliver that his fiancee has sustained permanent damage to her spine and will never walk again. This led DC die-hards to conclude that the now-wheelchair-bound Felicity will be taking on the role of Oracle.
The Felicity-Oracle connection has been suggested before. In Season 3, an episode about Felicity's history was titled "Oracle" before it was inexplicably changed to "The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak." At the time, it was thought that the Oracle storyline had been pulled off the table after James Gordon was introduced as the central character in "Gotham."
Now, "Arrow" executive producer Wendy Mericle has spoken up about Felicity Smoak's rumored fate, confirming that Smoak eventually becoming Oracle is "off the table."
"That's something we definitely talked about [doing] with Felicity in the beginning… But yeah, it will not be Oracle, sadly," Mericle revealed in an interview with TVLine. "People have to tune in to see what happens," she added.
"Arrow" will resume its fourth season with "Blood Debts" on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
