'Bates Motel' Season 4 Spoilers: New Character To Complicate Mother and Son

The upcoming season of "Bates Motel" is expected to explore the change in Norma and Norman's relationship.

It was revealed that the mother and son will soon show a shift in their dynamics. The first episode of "Bates Motel" Season 4 slowly built up how Norman, played by Freddie Highmore, began overpowering his mother, Norma, played by Vera Farmiga.

After seeking help from a new doctor, who is played by Damon Gupton, Norma finally accepted the idea of treating her son's mental illness. This lack of control from Norma is expected to be the beginning of her character's development for the episodes to come.

According to IGN, Farmiga spoke about how her character is currently challenges by the idea of letting a stranger treat her son. Farmiga stated, "It's hard to give over to someone, and this is the first time she's giving over the reins wholeheartedly because she realizes she doesn't have all the answers. That's tough for her to do, and that's going to continue to be tough."

However, she explained that Gupton's character is expected to bring a new kind of aura to the show. She described his character as someone who has a holy presence in comparison to the craziness in the show.

Highmore also elaborated about the new character during the same interview. He said, "I think Dr. Edwards is the first person to truly understand Norman. I guess in that way it is somewhat heartbreaking for Norma because she is this mother who wants to help her son but actually needs to enlist the help of others in order to do that. And Dr. Edwards is very much the person who truly discovers who Norman is deep, deep down and what he is capable of."

"Bates Motel" Season 4 airs every Monday nights on A&E.
