'Batman v Superman' News, Spoilers: Zack Snyder Explains Decision to [MAJOR SPOILER], How Film's Ending Ties To 'Justice League'

[Major spoilers ahead]

One of the most surprising twists in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is Superman's (Henry Cavill) death during the battle with Doomsday. In the scene, the Man of Steel stabs the monster through the heart with a Kryptonite-tipped spear. But before the creature dies, it then stabs Superman with one of its spikes, killing the superhero.

"Dawn of Justice" director Zack Snyder explained the decision to kill Superman in the film in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"I felt like we had to kill Superman in this movie in order for us to have been serious with the entire premise of the film," he said. "And that's not to say that he clearly is gone forever."

According to Snyder, without Superman, the soon-to-be-formed Justice League will have a "vulnerability" that they will then have to figure out for themselves. Without the Man of Steel, they won't be as invincible.

In addition, Snyder explained that the reason Superman had to be taken out of the equation was so that Batman (Ben Affleck) will be the only one responsible for bringing together the Justice League. In a previous interview, Snyder said that in the tentatively-titled "Justice League: Part One," the Dark Knight will assemble the Justice League a la the main protagonist in the Kurosawa classic "Seven Samurai."

"One of the big things I wanted to make sure of was that as we went into 'Justice League,' Bruce Wayne was the one who was gathering the Justice League," he told Collider. "I thought it was really important to have Bruce Wayne be the samurai who goes and finds the other samurai, that to me was important."

In the interview with Collider, Snyder also said that "Dawn of Justice" executive producer Christopher Nolan, who helmed the "Dark Knight" trilogy, initially wasn't on board with the idea of killing Superman. After talking it through with Snyder, he eventually admitted that it was the better way to go.

"Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" is now in theaters.
