'Big Little Lies' Season 2: HBO Open for Another Season

HBO's mini mystery-drama series "Big Little Lies," which stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon among others, just aired its final episode on Sunday, April 2. The show ended on a strong note, drawing over 1.9 million viewers - almost 34 percent higher than its penultimate episode the other week.

The final episode also had a 64 percent higher viewership rate compared to its premiere episode in February. This consistently rising viewership could lead to a second season for the show, although it was only originally planned as a limited series.

HBO, on the other hand, is keeping its door open whenever the producers and writers of "Big Little Lies" come up with ideas to extend it. Along with many fans, Michael Ausiello of TVLine also advocated for a second season for the show.

"Like many TVLine readers, I'm not ready to say goodbye to these tough, mercurial, complex women," Ausiello wrote in his TVLine article. "Heck, I feel like I'm only now getting to really know them."

One of the main actors, Witherspoon, also revealed that there were discussions about possibly continuing the series, encouraging fans to tell novel author Liane Moriarty how much they would love another season of "Big Little Lies."

"That would be good. She's thinking about ideas, and so we would love to hear ideas," Witherspoon said during a Facebook Live video.

Director Jean Marc-Vallee, however, is firm in his decision to maintain "Big Little Lies" as a one-time deal as was originally intended.

"We won't give you a season two because it's so good like this," Vallee said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "Why spoil it?"

However, Valle clarified in another interview that he would still love to work with Kidman, Witherspoon, and the rest of the cast if given a chance for other projects, but not for another season of "Big Little Lies."

"Big Little Lies" also starred Shailene Woodley ("The Fault in Our Stars"), Alexander Skarsgard ("True Blood"), Adam Scott ("Parks and Recreation"), and Zoe Kravitz ("X-Men: First Class") among others.
