'Black-ish' Season 3 News, Updates, Spoilers: Junior Runs for President in 3.03, '40 Acres and A Vote'; Spoilers for 3.04
ABC's "Black-ish" has always been willing to tackle on the big issues. By its very nature, the family sitcom is already a racial discourse on itself, and adds more to its weight by discussing other heavy topics on its show. This week, the Johnson family hit a little closer to home: the upcoming elections and the turning corner on Barack Obama's ending presidency.
'Black-ish' Season 3 Episode 3: Dre and Obama
"Black-ish" Season 3 Episode 3, "40 Acres and A Vote," saw to a crestfallen Dre Johnson (Anthony Anderson), who's thoroughly unhappy that Obama's term is ending. He's still holding out hopes for a third term, and skipped work just to make hokey montages and slideshows of Obama's family portraits. But behind this crippling nostalgia and unproductivity is a brilliant understanding of what it's like to have the first African-American president.
Let it not be said that "Black-ish" 3.03 flinched from that topic, either. To Dre, Obama's rise to the presidency was a success for the Black community, whose position in American society have always been strained and marred by violence and discrimination.
Junior runs for class president
And so on and so forth. Dre then jumped into his new obsession: Junior (Marcus Scribner) being class president. There's even a whole thing where they talked about him being the first black president of his class. While highly intelligent, Junior is finding it hard to convince his classmates that he is more than up to the task, leading to Dre becoming his campaign manager.
As one might expect, Junior's campaign completely tanked. He delivered an awkward speech in a woman pantsuit, and then tried to be "black cool." Apparently that meant dabbing to Desiigner's "Panda," and he still managed to fail at that. After all that, however, Junior still brought home the presidency.
Meanwhile, Pops (Laurence Fishburne) and Johan (Daveed Diggs) lectured Jack (Miles Brown) about not voting. Jack was not having it as he expressed his outrage over a rigged class pet election and the First Lady's speech at the DNC. In the end, he managed to flip both Johan and Pops' cynicism and convinced them that they have the power to do something about the upcoming election.
'Black-ish' Season 3 Episode 4: Who's Afraid of the Big Black Man?
All in all, a good day's work. As for 'Black-ish' Season 3 Episode 4, titled "Who's Afraid of the Big Black Man," the official synopsis revealed that Dre will be confronted about the evolving views on black people, and desires to be more involved in the community by joining the Homeowners' Association. Bow (Tracey Ellis Ross), on the other hand, gets advice from Pop on how to better spend time with her kids before the new baby arrives.
"Black-ish" airs every Wednesday, 9:30 p.m., on ABC.
