'Borderlands 3' Dev Updates, News Details: Gearbox Shows Off Unreal Engine 4 Demo at GDC Panel

Gamers finally have a glimpse of what Unreal Engine 4 technology can bring into the gaming world through Gearbox's recent presentation and tech demo held during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California.

Through a GDC Panel, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford led the demo to show off the techniques that their team is presumably using to develop "Borderlands 3."

Pitchford explains that they intend to develop and evolve their games' graphics and overall look for the future "to make it more natural and basically next-gen."

The Gearbox CEO, however, emphasized that the demo was not a gameplay preview or in any way part of the upcoming "Borderlands 3," but enthusiasts speculate that the game will be developed according to the demo, especially since it featured similar-looking characters from the game.

A scene from the demo showed a familiar "Borderlands" character whose face was covered and blocked out by a shoulder pad. Pitchford, however, acknowledged that the cover-up was intended.

The demo only aimed to show scenes of what future Gearbox-developed games would look like. "This is not a video game; this is a technology demonstration of some ongoing research and development at Gearbox Software," Pitchford explained.

"Borderlands 3" was already confirmed to be in development since late last year, but it may have a different official title which is still to be announced by its developers.

In addition, despite its Unreal Engine 4 support, the upcoming game is confirmed to not have a Nintendo Switch version as Pitchford explained that Nintendo has other priorities.

Details of the upcoming game are still being kept under wraps, though Gearbox creative chief Mikey Neumann previously revealed in jest during the PAX East event that "everyone dies horribly" in the story.

Aside from that, the developers are thinking of adding Scooter's son, Scooper, by the game's next installment.

"Borderlands 3" is expected to come to PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 upon release. The game will be published by 2K.
