California Mother Stabbed 7 Month Old Son to Death in Park

A California mother stabbed her 7-month-old son to death Saturday, according to reports. Ashley Newton, 23, crashed her car in a popular park in northern California and later on approached police holding her dead child.

The California mother who stabbed her 7-month-old initially caught the attention of passerby when she rammed her car into a rock-wall at Del Valle Regional Park, which is east of San Francisco. Newton, who is from South Bay, began screaming and behaving erratically, witnesses told authorities.

When officers from the East Bay Regional Parks District Police Department arrived on the scene they initially thought the situation was a hit and run because Newton's car was left running with an empty child's seat. They were about to tow the Honda when they spotted her walking with her dead and bloodied baby, according to the Associated Press.

"Officers on the scene at the time attempted to resuscitate the child and were unsuccessful. The child was declared dead by paramedics," Police Chief Timothy Anderson told KTVU news.

Newton made statements that implicated herself in the stabbing of her child, and was arrested on suspicion of murder. She had what looked like self-inflicted knife wounds on her wrist and she may have been suffering from some form of depression, Anderson said.

"This is an extremely shocking case for us," he said, adding that investigators found a pocket knife in the park that could be the weapon used.

Newton was taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries, then jailed. She currently remains behind bars with no possibility of release via bond. The mother is due in court Tuesday.
