Canadian Supreme Court to Deliver Same-sex Marriage Decision
The Supreme Court in Canada is scheduled to rule whether same-sex marriages should be legal across the country on Thursday.
However, whatever is decided tomorrow is only advisory to the Parliament.
Justice Minister Irwin Cotler said Wednesday he expected the Supreme Court to uphold the appellate and lower-court judgments in this matter," reported the Canadian Press.
Same-sex marriage has already been legalized by courts in six provinces of the countrys ten provinces and one territory.
The Supreme Courts decision will answer four questions:
1) Does the federal government have exclusive authority to define marriage?
2) Does the charter protect religious groups from having to perform gay weddings against their beliefs?
3) Is the proposed same-sex marriage law constitutional?
4) Is the traditional definition of marriage - between one man and one woman - constitutional?
