Canelo Alvarez News: Veteran Trainer Thinks Alvarez Doesn't Stand A Chance Against Gennady Golovkin

Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, more notably known as the head trainer of Mexican boxing veteran Juan Manuel Marquez, believes that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez would not stand a chance against Gennady Golovkin.

In a report by Gregory Stangrit for Boxingscene, the 76-year-old trainer says the fight should not happen because Golovkin is "much better" than Beristain's fellow Mexican.

"His style is not as flashy as that of Canelo, but he is better," Beristain said. "He has a lot of different tactics, unlike Canelo. I think he could destroy [Canelo's] career."

Beristain adds that Alvarez should not have been declared the winner in the fight against former middleweight world champion Miguel Cotto, when the two men faced each other last November. He also noted that Alvarez's victory was mainly anchored by the "people's influence " and not by his skills as a boxer.

"In the fight with Golovkin, things will be different. Canelo's defensive skills are not enough to stand in front Golovkin for twelve rounds," he added.

After defeating Cotto via a unanimous decision verdict, he was able to bag the lineal Ring Magazine and WBC 160-pound title belts. Golovkin, on the other hand, is the current WBA (Super), IBF, IBO, and WBC interim champion, making him the mandatory challenger for Alvarez.

However, in a report by Dan Rafael for ESPN, "GGG" is being billed to face his own mandatory challenger, Tureano Johnson, which is being targeted to take place on April 23rd at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The said plans were confirmed by Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Eric Gomez.

Golovkin, who holds an immaculate record of 34-0 (with 31 victories by knockout), last saw action in October against Canadian David Lemieux.

The fight ended with the Kazakh knockout artist winning by eighth round knockout. He has currently ended his last 21 fights by stoppage.
