Canelo Alvarez vs Amir Khan: Gennady Golovkin Doesn't Think Fight Is Good For Boxing

Undefeated Kazakh professional boxer Gennady Golovkin believes the recent making of the middleweight title fight between WBC champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and former world champion Amir Khan would not be good for the sport.

In a report by Steve Kim for Boxingscene, "GGG" spoke in front of spectators on Tuesday at the Conga Room at LA Live, where he aired out his sentiments about the said May 7th clash at the newly constructed T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

"It's not good for sport, boxing," Golovkin said. "No respect to boxing."

The report adds that Golovkin was simply echoing the general public's statements about the supposed mismatch between Alvarez and Khan, noting the evident size advantage that the Mexican boxing sensation holds over his challenger.

Alvarez stands at 5'9" and holds a 70.5-inch reach. Khan, on the other hand, stands almost at 5'9" and holds a 71-inch reach advantage. However, the latter holds no experience fighting at a heavier weight class.

The heaviest Khan has fought is at 147-pounds, while Alvarez, a natural 155-pounder, has always fought bigger and stronger opponents. The said fight will be at a catchweight of 155-pounds.

Golovkin also noted how Khan does hold a possible speed advantage, being the leaner fighter, but also stressed the apparent size difference that Alvarez has.

Being the interim WBC middleweight champion, Golovkin is the mandatory challenger for the world title belt for the same organization.

Whoever wins the fight between Alvarez and Khan would be his next opponent. That being said, Golovkin is also aware about the same possible backlash that he himself could be in the receiving end of, if Khan does emerge victorious.

But as far as he is concerned, the WBC belt is the one thing that he needs to have and he is willing to do anything to have it around his waist.

"I need the fight, I need my green belt," Golovkin said, according to the Boxingscene report. "Doesn't matter who fights me, 'Canelo', Khan, Wade, Cotto."

Golovkin is slated to face fellow undefeated fighter Dominic Wade on April 23rd at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
